On-going qualitative studies on women in sex work in Pune, India
The vast majority of women engaged in sex work in India are forced into the trade by violence or coercion or are otherwise introduced as a result of extreme poverty.
Preliminary results from 36 women who have undergone the empowerment training find that after one year 90% of those requiring medication for HIV, TB or diabetes either initiated treatment or increased their adherence rates. More than 1/3 of the women re-established links with their native home and improved familial relationships, over 1/3 of the women established savings accounts and nearly 25% were able to successful pay their debts and leave sex work altogether.
